PGA NovaWorld Phan Thiet Enhances Player Experience

Phan Thiet, Vietnam: PGA NovaWorld Phan Thiet has announced a new partnership with Golf Genius and Tagmarshal, becoming the first golf course in Vietnam to install an integrated software system of this kind.

By implementing both Tagmarshal and Golf Genius software, one of the region’s premier new golf destinations continues to develop and improve the overall player experience, bringing benefits such as live scoring and leaderboard technology, to its members and guests.

The management staff at PGA NovaWorld Phan Thiet will be assisted in optimising the pace and flow of play across the two Greg Norman-designed courses through a state-of-the-art GPS system provided as part of the Tagmarshal technology.

Full, real-time operational oversight and reporting provides the tools to manage on-course operations effectively, resulting in enhanced player experiences and increased efficiency as the resort continues to become one of Vietnam and Asia’s most sought-after golf destinations.

PGA NovaWorld Phan Thiet showcases 36 holes, offering stunning ocean vistas alongside a rich and varied test. As the only PGA of America accredited venue in the region, the resort offers the next generation of local talent the opportunity to train and develop their games, helping to grow the sport in Vietnam.

The venue forms part of the wider NovaWorld Phan Thiet resort, located 200 kilometres east of Ho Chi Minh City. The 1,000-hectare oceanside city project aims to become one of Asia-Pacific’s leading tourism destinations, recently opening a new 25-hectare NovaDreams Adventure World theme park, in addition to a 16-hectare sports complex designed to host international competitions.

Quick 9: Pat Stein – Wild Rock Golf Club

Located in a woodland area with beautiful stream and sandstone ridges, Wild Rock Golf Club boasts expansive greens, breathtaking views, offers world-class golf experiences in the heart of Wisconsin Dells.

This course has also hosted many prestigious events, including the Wisconsin State Golf Association’s Senior Tour Championship and the Wisconsin PGA Section Championship in 2016, holding an impressive course record of 65.

In this exiting Quick 9, we had the amazing opportunity to chat to Pat Stein, Director of Golf at Wild Rock Golf Club, where we spend some time to get to know him a bit more and learn more about how Tagmarshal has improved operations at his course.

How would you describe your morning routine to kickstart your day?

During the season it ‘s an early start to the day. My dog normally gets up with me so it’s a quick walk around the block for her. With my Diet Coke in hand, I try to sneak out the door without waking my wife or two boys up. I use my 40-minute drive to work to map out what I need to get done that day. There’s something about seeing the sunrise that mentally gets me going.

Has golf always been your first love? What other sports/team are you a fan of?

For sure. I have so many great memories of playing golf with my Dad when I was younger.

Growing up in Wisconsin the golf season is short. I still remember the excitement of spring and waiting for the snow to melt so I could get back on the course, still makes me laugh think about it.

What is your favorite/greatest round of golf experience?

Playing golf with my two boys – the best rounds I played all year, hands down!

Tell us about your role at Wild Rock? Why is it important?

I’m the director of operations and I envision my role as the head coach of the team.

I really enjoy working with our staff to deliver an outstanding golf experience to all our guests. It’s been rewarding building a team that is committed to delivering the best experience we can daily.

Why has your course decided to invest in Tagmarshal?

Wild Rock is a large golf course that is complex for our course rangers to manage.

Tagmarshal has given us a great tool to help our staff manage our course and more importantly help us give our guests a better experience.

Being new to Tagmarshal, I think we are just scratching the surface of what we can do with it.

Since the implementation of the Tagmarshal system, how have your customers responded to the on-course experience?

I think the biggest thing is, it meets if not exceeds the expectations of what our guests have for Wild Rock.

Our guests love the technology and helps make for a better day on the course.

Describe Tagmarshal in three words. 

Next level technology.

What is your dream golf destination? Why?

It would have to be going and playing St. Andrews. Would be amazing to play where the game started.

Your best golf moment?

Not to repeat myself, but I truly think it when I was able to start playing golf with my kids. It brings back so many childhood memories of when I played with my Dad. Its given us time to connect as a family.

If you could be a caddie on Tour, whose caddie would you like to be and why?

I’m going back in time and saying Arnold Palmer.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Mr Palmer, I can’t imagine how much a person could learn from someone like that by just listening to what they have to say.

Quick 9: Don MacKay – Muskoka Highlands Golf Links

In this edition of our Quick 9’s, we take out some time to chat to Don MacKay, President, and learn more about how he has optimized his on-course operations at Muskoka Highlands Golf Links.

How would you describe your morning routine to kickstart your day?

We start at 6AM – turn off the alarms remotely and then get set and head across our parking lot from house to clubhouse – usually greeting early guests around 645AM for their 7AM tee time.
Lots of routine checking balances and play for the day.

Has golf always been your first love? What other sports/team are you a fan of?

I have played golf since I was 7 years old – starting at a par 3 course in Lively and then growing from there. My keen interest in the business was heightened when I became CFO for a group of companies one of which was a preeminent builder in Ontario.

What is your favorite/greatest round of golf experience?

There are no favorites -but the NGCOA golf tournament is always a great family time.

I did travel to Scotland to meetup with our eldest who was playing professional basketball in Manchester. We started at Turnberry and moved to Dundonald, then Macrihanish, then St Andrews and ended at Crail. A trip that have a lot of miles in it, and many smiles.

Tell us about your role at Muskoka Highlands? Why is it important?

Being an owner, there is no role. It is essentially to empower, assist and ensure that everyone can do their roles here.
My key inputs are in marketing and finance since our youngest son is now the GM and is growing into full operational control. It will take time.

Why has your course decided to invest in Tagmarshal?

We needed eyes on the course. We never had a Marshal – as they can be poor ambassadors if they do not do it well. Our course flows naturally at 3.5 – 4 hours for a round.

Tagmarshal gives us the eyes to prevent backups from happening. The color coding is very helpful to give us a warning as to where it might happen. We can then visit the players and assess the situation.
Importantly, it gives us data on the flow, and lets us deal with complaints of slow play by exposing and explaining the data to them. We often have people complain and then we tell them they played in less than 4 hours.

Since the implementation of the Tagmarshal system, how have your customers responded to the on-course experience?

The golfers appreciate the fact that we are watching without interfering with their game – and the games of others.

Describe Tagmarshal in three words. 

Eyes on course.

What is your dream golf destination? Why?

I would love to take my family to a small location in Scotland and play local courses for a week. Courses more like ours. We would sprinkle this with a couple of Name courses – but mostly local tracks.

Your best golf moment?

There is not one – sorry – every round is special in its own way.

If you could be a caddie on Tour, whose caddie would you like to be and why?

I am not a Tour follower. I have no favorites. I love that Canadians are now on the Tour as Canada is a golf crazy country. I would enjoy a round with Corry Conners – down to earth lad.
