Quick 9: Derek Guzman – Sand Valley Golf Resort

Our latest round of Quick 9 interviews, we get the chance to go one-on-one with Derek Guzman, Head Golf Professional, and learn more about how his passion helps to mobilize on-course operations, enhancing the player experience at his course.

How would you describe your morning routine to kickstart your day?

I start with some coffee and New York sports radio. Splash some water on my face and get after it.

Has golf always been your first love? What other sports/team are you a fan of?

No. Throughout grade school I played volleyball both for the school and for travel teams. I’ve been playing golf since a young age but didn’t deem it a career until later in life.

What is your favorite/greatest round of golf experience?

With my 3 best friends in the industry we played Erin Hills and Milwaukee Country Club in one day. We STILL talk about that day 4 years later.

Tell us about your role at Sand Valley? Why is it important?

As the Head Golf Professional at Sand Valley, I oversee the Bag Drop, Starters, and Rangers. I also coordinate and run the “in-house” majors, approve ADA requests, and much more. Basically anything that happens outside of the Golf Shop, I’ve got a hand in.

Why has your course decided to invest in Tagmarshal?

Pace of Play is our ownerships top priority. We needed software that could track our rounds and deliver great data to show our work!

Since the implementation of the Tagmarshal system, how have your customers responded to the on-course experience?

It’s taken a revamping of our “approach” to guests to make this work, as we want to act as supporters and not disciplinarians 🙂

Lots of potential.

What is your dream golf destination? Why?

Having been born and raised on Eastern Long Island, how could it not be there? So many great courses and it’s home for me!

Your best golf moment?

Playing in an Assistant’s Championship in New Jersey. It was really fun to be a part of, and grind on a tough and rainy day.

If you could be a caddie on Tour, whose caddie would you like to be and why?

Adam Hadwin. He won the first event on tour in 2016 after receiving my first equipment deal ever. It was with Callaway, he won the 2016 Valspar that week playing Callaway and has been my favorite dude on tour since.

Quick 9: Mike Lepore – Airport Golf Club

Nestled within an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, The Airport Golf Club boasts spectacular views, precious wildlife, and memorable golf experiences.

This tree-lined, parkland golf course is widely recognized as “Cheyenne’s best” — and has continuously lived up to their reputation for delivering high quality golf experiences. Dubbed as “Home” of the Wyoming Open, they are proud to fulfil their role as hosts of this professional golf tournament.

We are so thrilled to have had the opportunity to conduct a Quick 9 interview with Mike Lepore, Head Golf Professional, where he opens up about his love for golf and how his passion drives continuous improvement and on-course optimization at Airport Golf Course.

How would you describe your morning routine to kickstart your day?

Nothing to it really… Shower, shave, dress, and off to meet the day!!

Has golf always been your first love? What other sports/team are you a fan of?

Yes, and it will always be!!

What is your favorite/greatest round of golf experience?

My favorite rounds were always with my dad. Didn’t do it much but when we did, they were special.

Tell us about your role at Airport Golf? Why is it important?

As the Head Golf Professional for both Cheyenne city courses, it is of utmost importance for me to uphold a professional golf presence within the golfing community of Cheyenne and to ensure that we provide high-quality experiences each time players visit.

Why has your course decided to invest in Tagmarshal?

Because we need a way to get our golfers to think about the importance of speed of play and to give them an actual visual of how slow or fast, they are playing. It has also saved us some money in payroll by not having to hire marshals.

Since the implementation of the Tagmarshal system, how have your customers responded to the on-course experience?

I think for the most part favorably. It makes them aware of the fact that we are watching their speed of play and what they do out there and I think they like that, they feel less harassed.

Describe Tagmarshal in three words. 

Decent little system.

What is your dream golf destination? Why?

I like the courses at Bandon Dunes. It’s beautiful there and peaceful, and just fun.

Your best golf moment?

Coaching my high school teams to 11 state titles.

If you could be a caddie on Tour, whose caddie would you like to be and why?

Arnold Palmer. He is what golf is all about.
