Our latest round of Quick 9 interviews, we get the chance to go one-on-one with Derek Guzman, Head Golf Professional, and learn more about how his passion helps to mobilize on-course operations, enhancing the player experience at his course.
How would you describe your morning routine to kickstart your day?
I start with some coffee and New York sports radio. Splash some water on my face and get after it.
Has golf always been your first love? What other sports/team are you a fan of?
No. Throughout grade school I played volleyball both for the school and for travel teams. I’ve been playing golf since a young age but didn’t deem it a career until later in life.
What is your favorite/greatest round of golf experience?
With my 3 best friends in the industry we played Erin Hills and Milwaukee Country Club in one day. We STILL talk about that day 4 years later.
Tell us about your role at Sand Valley? Why is it important?
As the Head Golf Professional at Sand Valley, I oversee the Bag Drop, Starters, and Rangers. I also coordinate and run the “in-house” majors, approve ADA requests, and much more. Basically anything that happens outside of the Golf Shop, I’ve got a hand in.
Why has your course decided to invest in Tagmarshal?

It’s taken a revamping of our “approach” to guests to make this work, as we want to act as supporters and not disciplinarians 🙂

What is your dream golf destination? Why?
Having been born and raised on Eastern Long Island, how could it not be there? So many great courses and it’s home for me!
Your best golf moment?
Playing in an Assistant’s Championship in New Jersey. It was really fun to be a part of, and grind on a tough and rainy day.
If you could be a caddie on Tour, whose caddie would you like to be and why?
Adam Hadwin. He won the first event on tour in 2016 after receiving my first equipment deal ever. It was with Callaway, he won the 2016 Valspar that week playing Callaway and has been my favorite dude on tour since.
